So lately for some reason I've been in a baking mood. I can't really say it's the season or the weather, because it feels like perpetual summer out here. Mike thinks I need a job, which thankfully starts next week. In the meantime, I've made about 3 dozen cookies, dinner rolls, and muffins in the last couple days.
So this morning I decided I wanted to try homemade cinnamon rolls. There was a recipe for Cinnabon-type rolls in a magazine I have, so I went with that one. I have to say, I love my breadmaker (thanks mom!). I warmed the milk and started the yeast, then added the ingredients and pushed start. It took care of the kneading and rising for me. Nice!
After I had filled them, rolled them, and cut them, I put them in the pan for a second rise. It was during this time that Mikey decided a triple octoflugaron down the stairs was in order. The tumbling sound was quickly followed by a piercing scream, which signaled to me this was no ordinary trip down the stairs.
Sure enough, when I got to him, there was massive amounts of blood everywhere. On the stairs, on the bannister, and pouring from his mouth. I raced him to the kitchen (leaving a bloody trail as I went) and shoved a wet washcloth in his mouth. My first concern was his teeth, and then the laceration. I know mouth cuts can bleed obscenely, even when the cut isn't that bad.
Looking into his mouth I noticed his inner lip looked like ground beef, and the bleeding really was quite a bit, so off to the ER we went to see if a stitch was in order. I left the rolls to rise.
We were met at the door by a nurse and a medic, they promptly examined his poor little mouth the best they could while Mikey screamed. The bleeding was starting to slow down. We were triaged and the doc saw us and made sure Mikey was ok. No stitches needed for the lac, but 3 of his front teeth were knocked loose. Thank goodness they're baby teeth, we can wait to see a dentist until tomorrow.
In the meantime, Tylenol and popscicles as needed are the prescription, and the poor guy has quite the fat lip:
So back to house we went, and he went to the sofa to watch Spongebob, and I went to finish my baking. The rolls had risen nicely while we were gone, and they baked up a lovely golden brown:
I made the icing with confectioner's sugar, melted butter, and heavy cream:
Of course the boys couldn't wait to get their hands on them, so four of them have already gone missing.
After the rolls finished, I rolled out the cookie dough I had made earlier and made giant heart cookies. They baked up nice and puffy and I'm hoping to make Christmas pigs with this recipe. Here they are cut and ready to bake:
And here they are iced up (same recipe as above):
I hope they taste as good as the smell...I can't wait to make Christmas cookies with this recipe! I think I might try making "cookie baskets" for gifts this year.
In other news, turtle watching has been wonderful, I've only had one or two come up while I've been there, but to just sit on the beach with them is so peaceful and amazing. They are so beautiful! Here is Hiwahiwa (heeva heeva), a 35-40 year old female. You can see her time-depth recorder on her carapace:
And this is Claudette, who is another female, but newer to this beach:
Aren't they gorgeous?

Picture Sharing Time! MILITARY BALL STYLE!!
Last night, Friday the 13th was an awesome day for two reasons: one, it was my mommy's birthday (Happy Birthday mommy!!!!!), and two it was the military ball and kickoff to Mike's 30 day R&R!
The ball was held at the Hawaii Hilton, in the Coral Ballroom. We ended up being about 5 minutes late to seating, because the traffic was HORRIBLE and as usual I couldn't get out the door on time to begin with (a girl has to look nice, right?).
Late or not, it was a much deserved night out with my hubby, and I have the blisters to prove it! We ate, we danced, we had fun with friends...there could have been a little drinking...but it was wonderful.
Here are some pictures to share, enjoy!

It was just a great night, Mike and I commented on the way home that the last time we went dancing was probably our wedding! It was so nice to have an evening of no children, no obligations, just the two of us among friends, enjoying a night in Waikiki!

Mike's Parents Left Yesterday
Well, Mike's parents left late last night, back to North Dakota. We will miss them, we had a wonderful time while they were here! I still haven't loaded up the pictures from the luau, maybe I'll be able to do that later today.
Today is cloudy and rainy. A great day to turn off the a/c and open all the windows. Ahhh...fresh air! The older boys are off to school, though a bit late. I guess my alarm clock turned itself back one hour for daylight savings, but we don't observe daylight savings here. So while I thought it was 0630, it was acutally 0730, and everyone was late. Oh well...at least they made it. Joseph just started in an after-school program building robots, I'm hoping for a housecleaning robot for Christmas.
Mike is back to work, he had a PT test this morning so hopefully that went well. Then later he has a layout where they (soldiers) lay out all their gear for inspection.
I have some cleaning to do but I am so exhausted, and this chair is feeling pretty comfortable.
Maybe later.
Aloha!

Picture Sharing Time! BBQ at SSG Charloux's!
Yesterday for Halloween we drove down to Ewa Beach, an old Naval Base converted into housing hosted by SSG Charloux. His home was located just steps from the beach, and it was absolutely beautiful. We had so much fun with friends, food, volleyball, and swimming on the beach---but it only got better when the drinks started going down---and Mike came out in his costume!
